Tsung-Lo LO, Plant Physiologist, Academician Director (1953-1978) Tsung-Lo LO, was a notalbe Chinese botanist and plant physiologist. He also was a main founder of modern plant physiology in China.
Lo was born in Huangyan, Zhejiang Province on 2ndAug 1898. In 1930, Lo obtained PhD from Hokkaido University in Japan. Lo returned to China and became the head of the department of biology at the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhouin Feb 1930. After 1949, Lo became the first president of the Research Institute of Plant Physiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Lo was one of the main founders of the Chinese Society for Plant Physilogy, and was its first and second president. Lo was elected as a member of Academia Sinica in 1948 and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1955. |

Yun-Gang SHEN, Plant Physiologist, Academician Director (1983-1991) Yun-Gang SHEN, male, He is native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from the Agricultural Chemistry Department of Zhejiang University in 1951. A plant physiologist, Shen carried out experiments on the transition of carbohydrate with plans and proved that amylase could influence the ability of phosphorlyase to synthesize starch by resolving quickly the added starch. In doing so, he negated ideas that amylase had a direct prohibitive function. In the 1960s, he started research on the mechanism of photosynthesis. This led him to discover the existence of an intermediate state of high energy during the process of photophosphorylation and advanced the notion that an intermediate state could exist in many forms. Shen also posited that the allosteric difference of coupling factors could affect the scattering and disappearing of the intermediate state of high energy and the efficiency of coupling. His research eventually led him to analyze the relation between the transitive function of energy and membrane structure. A research fellow at the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology, Shen was elected as an academician to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980. |

Zhi-Hong XU, Plant Physiologist, Academician
Director (1991-1994) Zhi-Hong XU is native of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from the Biology Department of Beijing University in 1965 and completed postgraduate studies from the Shanghai Plant Physiology Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1969. Xu is a plant physiologist. Xu has had a long and varied academic career. He was a researcher at the Shanghai Plant Physiology Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and later served as the academy's deputy dean. In addition, Xu has been the president of Beijing University. Among his academic achievements, Xu studied the cultivation of plant organization and hereditary operation on cultivated cells. He later obtained rebirth plants from protoplasm cultivation of 15 series of important crops and woods – including soybeans, peanuts, and alamo. Xu verified that existing matter could promote growth of the male pit in anther through cultivation of anther. Xu was elected as an academician to the Third World Academy of Science in 1995. Two years later, he was elected as an academician to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. | |

ZhangchengTANG, Research Fellow Director (1994-1999) Professor Tang was born in January, 1941 in Shanghai. He graduated from Department of Biology, Nankai University in 1963. Then, he got the admission and was matriculated by Institute of Botanic Physiology, CAS. Mr. ShiweiLUO, famous cell biologist and botanic physiologist of our country, was his tutor. Tang Zhangcheng graduated with a master's degree in 1967 and has stayed at Institute of Botanic Physiology, CAS, till now. 1980.5-1982.5, he did research at School of Life Science and School of Agriculture, the University of Wisconsin, as a visiting scholar. He has participated in or organized the research mostly of Botanic Environment Engineering for the over past 30 years. He especially researched on the affects on the plants' growing and developing of adverse environment, such as drought, salt, flood, unfavorable temperature, near-zero gravity. He also researched on plants' anti-adversity mechanism. These researches involve the composition, structure, function of botanic cellular velum, the ability of cell's osmotic adjustment, and the relationship between plant hormone and plants' anti-adversity. Due to the significance of the research he has participated in and organized, they were awarded the prize by the National Science Conference, CAS, Shanghai Municipal government and Science & Engineering Committee of National Defence. Tang Zhangcheng has published more than 80 theses in domestic and oversea academic publications such as Science in China, Science Bulletin, Physiol Plant, Plant and Soil. He has cultivated several doctors. Tang Zhangcheng currently holds the posts of 1) Dean of Shanghai branch of Chinese Academy of Science, 2) Head of Shanghai Institute of Botanic Physiology (adjunct), 3) Committee Member of National Scientific Association, 4) Vice President of Shanghai Scientific Association, 5) Director of Chinese Botanic Physiology Association, and 6) Delegate of the 9th National People's Congress. | |
